talking : topics

We have put together a selection of “Talking Topics” for you to use on your segment to engage with your listeners.
talking topics : for December

Presenters are often encouraged to talk about their own experiences, what they’ve seen, overheard or read and to bring something of themselves to their programme, that way they create a stronger bond with their audience than simply saying ‘that was … this is’.

Appear more conversational, more relatable, more real and build up a connection with your audience who are more likely to stay loyal with random “Talking Topics”.

I remember The “Umberto Show” back in the days on Real Radio (before he sadly passed away) with his phone ins and they were massively popular due to random topics he would speak about.

We have put together a selection of “Talking Topics” for you to use on your segment to engage with your listeners. Remember… It’s stories, rather than opinions and theories, that usually make more relatable content and better ‘phone fodder’.

1. When you were a child, what did you save up to buy? How long did it take and was it worth it?
2. Strange recommendations made to you by Amazon or any shopping website – ‘because you bought X you’ll like Y’.
3. I gave up smoking but now I can’t stop sucking lollies, Kojak-style. Have you ever become addicted to something, after trying to wean yourself off something else?
4. What great films have you recently re-discovered? Why do they mean so much to you? What memories do they stir up?
5. Have you ever been fooled by a first impression that did not live up to reality? Not just people, but perhaps places, food, equipment…
6. Is there a subject or tradition that only happened at your school? Perhaps at the end of term or during exam month?
7. Do you drive a long way just to get a certain something – a certain shoe shop or to a particular dentist.
8. You are at your partner’s flat. They pop out to get some shopping and idling around you notice their diary? Do you read it?
9. What have you done to make your self look better? Drastic surgery perhaps, but also what about other more subtle changes

10. In Australia they bite the top and bottom off a TimTam (chocolate sandwich biscuit/cookie with a chocolate crème centre) and suck milk through it … to get chocolate milk. Perhaps you dismantle custard creams or stick two chocolate digestives together … what strange things do you do with biscuits/cookies?

11. If you could receive one small package from someone … who would it be from and what would it be?
12. Tell me a story that starts with the following line: ‘My pet’s lucky to be alive because…’
13. I’m looking for a superb smoothie recipe. Can you help me out? Is it cheaper to buy a machine and fruit and do it yourself or buy pre-bottled smoothies?
14. Who was your childhood hero? Maybe a comic hero, or someone off the TV, but perhaps it was a relative, or a teacher … What about their values and ethics do you admire?
15. What is over-rated: Margaritas; all that faf with limes and salt. Roll-up cigarettes, what a performance. Fondues – do people still do that?
16. What sort of accent have you got? I’m a bit of XXX, with a dollop of XXX. In Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, the Professor tells Eliza that her dad must have come from Hounslow because he can hear it in her accent. I wonder if you agree with me that a lot of those who go on about other people ‘not speaking properly’ are confusing good expression with having a different accent. In other words they end up condemning other people for not being ashamed of where they came from.

17. What is the best place for the best doughnut? What makes the best one: texture, jam, size, sugar, dusting, ring or round?

18. Quick poll: what is your car colour? Why? Are they easier to see, or easier to keep clean? Perhaps you had a romantic rendezvous in one that hue!
19. Runaways: have you ever seen a runaway car, horse, shopping trolley? Did you manage to stop it? What damage did it do?
20. What do you do that’s dangerous? Perhaps you do it regularly even though you should know better … and it may be as straightforward as sticking cotton buds in your ears, or more dramatic such as skydiving, or having affairs.
