2016 - Ranked outsiders Leicester City win the Premier League title. They achieved the impossible and were crowned champions for the first time in their history at odds of 5,000- 1.

1840 - The first British Penny Black stamp went on sale. Invented by Rowland Hill, it was the world’s first adhesive postage stamp and it became valid for postage on 6th May.

1948 - The launch of the Land Rover Defender. The first model was sold for £450 at the Amsterdam Motor Show.

2011 - The marriage of Prince William, 2nd in line to the throne, and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey. The day was declared a bank holiday in celebration.

1923 - The first FA Cup Final was held at Wembley Stadium. 200,000 people arrived at a stadium which was only designed to hold 125,000 and when 60,000 irate fans rushed the turnstiles a human torrent swept onto the pitch.

1986 - Soviet authorities order the evacuation of Pripyat (est population 45,000), Chernobyl (est population 12,000) and 94 other villages (est total population 40,000) due to the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster.

1984 - The re-opening of the reconstructed Cavern Club in Liverpool located next to the original Club. In the early 1960s the Cavern Club became the most publicised pop music venue in the world.

2012 - A new initiative paired the Scottish hamlet of Dull with an American town named Boring. The Dull and Boring plan was hatched after a resident of Dull, near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, cycled through Boring in Oregon.

2014 - Yorkshire Sculpture Park won the £100,000 Art Fund Museum of the Year prize and was hailed as 'one of the finest outdoor museums one might ever imagine.
