1958 – The mayor and corporation of High Wycombe were weighed in, in full view of the public to see whether or not they had been getting fat at the taxpayers’ expense!

1962 – Bobby Moore makes his England debut in a 4-0 friendly victory against Peru. He was marked as the youngest man ever to serve England as a captain.

1965 – The Chief Inspector of Constabularies announced that Britain’s police would be armed with tear gas guns and grenades for use against dangerous criminals, but that it would not be used for crowd control.

1975 – The death of Dame Barbara Hepworth, English sculptor. Her work exemplifies Modernism and, along with Henry Moore and others, she helped to develop modern art, sculpture in particular, in Britain.

1979 – Elton John and his entourage flew into Moscow, making him the first western pop star to tour the USSR.

1985 – The House of Commons agreed to consider Sunday Trading proposals.

1993 – Britain finally ratified the Maastricht Treaty which allowed greater co-operation between members of the European Union.

1996 – The death of actor John Devon Roland Pertwee, (‘Jon’ Pertwee) known for his role in the TV series Doctor Who and as the title character in the series Worzel Gummidge. He is also well known for his 18-year stint on BBC Radio as Chief Petty Officer Pertwee in The Navy Lark.

2012 – Bee Gees’ singer Robin Gibb died aged 62 after a lengthy battle with cancer. The group was among the biggest-selling of all time with hits spanning six decades. His twin brother and band partner Maurice died in 2003 aged 53 following complications from a twisted intestine.

2013 – The Church of Scotland voted in favor of allowing openly gay men and women to be ministers.

2014 – Det. Chief Supt. David Knopwood was fined £1000 and banned from driving for 12 months after going to the pub (29th April) to ‘unwind’, after officers from his unit had investigated the fatal stabbing of school teacher Ann Maguire by a 16 year old pupil.

2015 – The Rolling Stones play a surprise gig at the 1,300-capacity Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles during which they perform the entire Sticky Fingers album.

2017 – Pippa Middleton, sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, marries James Matthews in Englefield, Berks.

2019 – Google stops support for Huawei’s Android system in an escalation of the tech war between the US and China. On the same day, Formula 1 legend Nikki Lauda dies aged 70.
