The day today
1903 – Dorothy Levitt became the first English woman in the world to compete in a ‘motor-race’. She was the most successful female competitor in Great Britain, also a victorious speedboat driver, holder of the Water Speed record and holder of the Ladies World Land speed record.
1947 – The ‘Indian Independence Bill’ was presented before the House of Commons, proposing the partition of the Provinces of British India into two sovereign countries – India and Pakistan.
1968 – Round-the-world yachtsman Alec Rose received a hero’s welcome as he sailed into Portsmouth in his boat Lively Lady, after his 354-day trip.
1996 – Prince Charles, Prince of Wales delivered his terms for a divorce from Diana, Princess of Wales – an offer of £15m reportedly backed by the Queen.
2014 – TV entertainer Rolf Harris (84 at the time), was sentenced to 5 years and 9 months in prison after being found guilty of indecently assaulting four girls (including one who was aged 7 or 8) in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

1964 – The Beach Boys started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘I Get Around’, the group’s first No.1, which was a No.7 hit in the UK.
1976 – The Clash made their live debut supporting the Sex Pistols at the Black Swan, Sheffield, England.
1999 – Victoria ‘Posh Spice’ Adams married footballer David Beckham at Luttrellstown Castle, Ireland. The couple had signed a deal worth £1million for OK magazine to have the exclusive picture rights.
2003 – American record producer and singer-songwriter and five-time Grammy Award-winner Barry White died from Kidney failure aged 58. Produced hits for girl group Love Unlimited and other chart hits include 1974 hit ‘You’re The First, The Last, My Everything’, 1974 US No.1 ‘Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe’.
2010 – George Michael was arrested after he crashed his car into the front of a Snappy Snaps store in Hampstead, North London. The singer was returning home from a Gay Pride parade when the incident was spotted on CCTV.

1829 – The first London bus “omnibus”, operated by George Shillibeer, begins service between Marylebone Road and Bank Junction.
1838 – Huskar Colliery Mining Disaster in Silkstone England: mining pit floods drown 26 children, leads to 1842 ‘Mines and Collieries Act’ bans women and children working underground.
1840 – The Cunard Line’s 700 ton wooden paddle steamer RMS Britannia departs from Liverpool bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia on the first transatlantic crossing with a scheduled end.
1862 – Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) creates Alice in Wonderland for Alice Liddell on a family boat trip on the river Isis (Thames) in Oxford.
