1943 – World War II: The Allied invasion of Sicily begins, leading to the downfall of Mussolini and forcing Hitler to break off the Battle of Kursk.
1981 – Donkey Kong, a video game created by Nintendo, was released, featuring the debut of Mario.
1984 – A massive fire, caused by a lightning strike, devastated large parts of York Minster causing an estimated £1m damage.
2017 – Wayne Rooney announces he will leave Manchester United after 13 years to re-join his first club, Everton.

1971 – David Bowie started recording sessions at Trident Studios in London, for what would become the concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.
1983 – The Police started an eight week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Every Breath You Take’ also No.1 in the UK and Wham! went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their debut release ‘Fantastic!’, which went on to spend 116 weeks on the chart.
2006 – Muse started a two week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with ‘Black Holes & Revelations’ the bands fifth album release and second No.1.
2007 – Happy Mondays’ frontman Shaun Ryder was in trouble after he smoked several cigarettes on stage during a concert at The Ritz in Manchester. Smoking had been banned in all enclosed public places in England on 1 July of this year, and anyone flouting the law faced a £50 fine.
2013 – Former Fugees singer Lauryn Hill began a three-month prison sentence in Connecticut for tax evasion. The 38-year-old was sentenced in May for failing to pay tax on $1.8m (£1.2m) of her earnings between 2005-07.

1540 – England’s King Henry VIII had his six-month marriage to his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, annulled.
1553 – The Duke of Northumberland announced to Lady Jane Grey that Edward VI had died and that she was queen of England. The proclamation was made the next day, but her reign lasted for only nine days.
1877 – The first Wimbledon Lawn Tennis championship was held at its original site at Worple Road. The men’s singles title was won by Spencer Gore – beating fellow British player W.C. Marshall in three sets.
1900 – Queen Victoria gave the Royal Assent to the Australian Federation Bill which set up of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.
1917 – British battleship HMS Vanguard explodes at Scapa Flow (the result of an internal explosion of faulty cordite), killing 804.
