The day today
1935 – Britain introduced the compulsory use of ‘L’ plates for learner drivers. Also On This Day, all people who had started to drive on or after 1 April 1934 needed to have passed the test. Legislation for compulsory testing was introduced for all new drivers with the Road Traffic Act 1934 but the test was initially voluntary to avoid a rush of candidates.
1938 – The Bren gun was issued to the armed forces service. Bren Gun took its name from Brno, the Czechoslovakian city where it was designed, and Enfield, the location of the British Royal Small Arms Factory.
1939 – The sinking, during sea trials, of HMS Thetis, in Liverpool Bay. It was the Royal Navy’s worst ever submarine disaster and 99 men lost their lives when the torpedo officer opened the test cocks on the torpedo tubes to add weight to the submarine as it was having difficulty diving. In the confusion, the inner door was then also opened and the inrush of water caused the submarine to sink to the seabed. Oxygen on board was quickly running out, levels of carbon dioxide became dangerously high and after 50 hours trapped inside their metal tomb, 99 died of carbon dioxide poisoning. Rescuers could have saved the crew by cutting air holes through the hull when it was resurfaced, but the Admiralty refused, because the submarine would have been permanently weakened.
1944 – During World War II, Nazi occupiers made providing aid to downed Allied pilots a severe, punishable offense. Civilians and local networks that sheltered or aided aircrews faced execution for men, and deportation to concentration camps for women.
1946 – Ion Antonescu, Romania’s World War II dictator, was executed by a military firing squad. Convicted of war crimes by the People’s Tribunal in Bucharest, he faced death alongside three other former high-ranking wartime officials at the Jilava prison.
1951 – The European Union expanded the 1951 Stresa Convention. This change made it illegal for others to imitate cheeses already named. It was the first time union states joined together to agree on the names of cheeses. For example, genuine Parmigiano Reggiano or Gorgonzola can only be made in designated Italian provinces.
1962 – SS officer Adolf Eichmann is executed in Israel following his conviction for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and crimes against the Jewish people. Following World War II, Eichmann escaped to Argentina where he lived under a false identity until he was captured by Israeli Mossad agents in May 1960. He was subsequently transported to Israel to stand trial in Jerusalem.
1968 – Britain and Iceland signed a formal end to the ‘Cod War’ over fishing rights in the North Sea.
1970 – Labour Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, is hit in the face with an egg thrown by a Young Conservative demonstrator outside Wealdstone Labour Hall in north London. Wilson responds: “If the Tories win the next election no one will be able to afford an egg.”
1974 – The Heimlich Maneuver was published in an informal article “Pop Goes the Cafe Coronary”, for the first time. The life-saving maneuver to rescue choking victims was invented by Henry Heimlich, the technique’s namesake.
1974 – A chemical plant (Nypro) explodes in Flixborough Lincolnshire killing 28 workers and injuring 36 others on site. Two months prior, a crack was discovered in Reactor No. 5. To maintain production, the plant’s team bypassed the damaged reactor by installing a temporary, unengineered, dog-legged 20-inch bypass pipe to connect Reactors 4 and 6. The rupture released approximately 30 to 50 tonnes of boiling cyclohexane, which instantly vaporised into a massive flammable cloud. The cloud drifted until it found an ignition source (likely a nearby furnace), triggering an explosion equivalent of up to 45 tonnes of TNT.
1978 – David Gower (21) made his Test cricket debut for England against Pakistan at Edgbaston. He went on to score a graceful 58 runs in his debut innings. England ultimately dominated the fixture, winning the match by an innings and 57 runs.
1985 – Famously known as the Battle of the Beanfield, roughly 1,300 police officers intercepted a 140-vehicle convoy of New Age Travellers (the Peace Convoy) traveling to Wiltshire to set up the annual Stonehenge Free Festival. Confrontations broke out when police stormed the convoy, smashing windows and dragging occupants out. The police stated they were pelted with petrol bombs, stones, and wood. Protesters and journalists, however, described the police actions as an ambush and severe brutality.
1990 – U.S. President George H. W. Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev signed the bilateral 1990 Chemical Weapons Accord at a Washington, D.C. summit to end chemical weapon production. This bilateral commitment paved the way for the multilateral Chemical Weapons Convention finalised just a few years later in 1993, which sought to globally ban the development, production, and stockpiling of these weapons.
1997 – Dr. Betty Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X, suffered severe burns across 80% of her body after her 12-year-old grandson, Malcolm Shabazz, intentionally set a fire in her Yonkers, New York apartment. She succumbed to her injuries weeks later and died on June 23, 1997.
2011 – NASA’s Endeavour Space Shuttle landed for its 25th and final time. Mission STS-134 was meant to be the final Space Shuttle Mission, but another mission was later added at the last minute and flown by the Atlantis Space Shuttle. During the Endeavour’s lifetime, it spent 299 days in space, flying a total of 122,883,151 miles.
2016 – Switzerland’s Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world’s longest and deepest railway tunnel stretching 35 miles beneath the Alps is completed. At its deepest point, it sits 2.3 km (7,545 feet) beneath the surface, requiring massive ventilation systems to combat temperatures of up to 46 degrees Celsius.
2019 – Liverpool beat Tottenham, 2-0 to win the Champions League at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid with goals coming from Mohamed Salah (2′ pen) and Divock Origi (87′).
2020 – The meteorological office announced that 2020 had been the sunniest spring on record for the UK and the driest May on record in England for 150 years. Wales reported its driest May since 1896, although Scotland saw near average rainfall.
2020 – As a further easing of the coronavirus lockdown rules, groups of up to six people could meet outdoors in England. The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, described it as a “long awaited and joyful moment” as family and friends reunite after 10 weeks in lockdown.
2021 – Prehistoric carvings, between 4,000 and 5,000 years old depicting deer, are found at Kilmartin Glen, Argyll in Scotland and , they are the earliest known prehistoric animal carvings in Scotland. The artwork features highly detailed depictions of two male red deer with full-grown antlers, as well as three other quadrupeds (believed to be young deer).
2022 – Turkey officially changed its name to Türkiye at the United Nations and in international contexts following a formal request to the UN by the Turkish government. The move was a push to rebrand the country and dissociate its name from the bird of the same name and its negative dictionary connotations.
2024 – The world’s largest-ever election ends in India after six weeks with 642 million people voting in the country’s general election, including a record 312 million women.

1959 – The first edition of Juke Box Jury aired on the BBC. The shows host, David Jacobs, lead a revolving panel of guests in critiquing the week’s top record releases. 2006 – The 1994 debut album by Oasis, Definitely Maybe was voted the greatest album of all time in a survey to mark 50 years of the Official UK Albums Chart. 2016 – Ed Sheeran was revealed as the most-played pop act in the UK in 2015. 1879 – The death of Napoléon, Prince Imperial (also known as Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte), the last dynastic Bonaparte. After his father was dethroned in 1870, he relocated with his family to England and served with British forces in the Anglo-Zulu War. He was killed in a skirmish with a group of Zulus and is buried in Farnborough, Hampshire. His death destroyed the hope for the restoration of the House of Bonaparte to the throne of France.
